Linework demands summary and studies simplification
Linework can’t and shouldn’t represent every detail. Hence, efforts are made to stylize internal details and outer contours.
The Owl
The complicated curve is deliberately omitted in favor of a simpler C curve
Same logic, no need to dig out these outer details when we really just want a silhouette
Again, the reference simplifies the outer contour into a C. No information of value is lost.
Angles and Curves
67.5, 45, and 30 degrees seem mainstream. They can then be converted into CSI lines Straight lines are advisory before attempting the actual curve.
Envelope
Developed by finding the key turning point, usually the tangent of a curve or angle. Envelopes can be made from finding the main tangents of the contour and leaving the smaller shapes relegated to negative space.
